Dear Mr. President and Madame Vice President.
We urge you to take decisive action and grant freedom to the tens of thousands of individuals currently serving federal sentences for non-violent cannabis-related convictions in our nation’s prisons. It is a tragedy that these individuals are being kept behind bars, wasting valuable resources and tearing families apart. It is unjust to continue criminalizing the possession, use, and distribution of cannabis, which is now legal in most states.
The incarceration of non-violent cannabis offenders serves no purpose other than to perpetuate the failed War on Drugs and the resulting racial disparities in the criminal justice system. These individuals are not a threat to society and deserve the chance to reintegrate back into the World and contribute to their communities in a positive manner.
We ask that you take immediate action to commute the sentences of all non-violent cannabis offenders and work towards a fair criminal justice system for all. Let us not forget that we are all human beings, and as such, we are all capable of making mistakes. It is our duty to show compassion and empathy towards those who have fallen through hard times. Let us make history by taking a bold step toward justice and equality. We have faith that you both will rise to the challenge and lead our nation toward a brighter and more just future.
